Le Bugue is a thriving small medievel market town, nestled on the banks of the Vézère river, in the Dordogne area of South West France. The town is a central hub for outlying communities, and has shops, bars, restaurants, supermarkets and has many tourist attractions within easy reach. With its long hot summers, and mild winters, it is the ideal base for a holiday in the Dordogne at any time of the year.

 

The Markets

People travel from miles around to the Le Bugue markets. The main market is held every Tuesday, with a smaller one on Saturdays. In 2019 Le Bugue Market celebrated its 700th anniversary. Every Tuesday, in July and August, there are Les Mardis Gourmands (night food markets) where locals get together with holiday makers on the banks of La Vézère river to eat and drink from a multitude of international food stalls. It’s a real party atmosphere with live music and dancing into the night…

Le Bugue is situated in the heart of Dordogne and the Périgord noir which is regarded by many as the jewel of French gastronomy. The area is very famous for foie gras, truffles, walnuts, duck, strawberries, cherries, ceps mushrooms as well as the renowned wines of Bergerac and Bordeaux. It also produces many varieties of cheese, honey, jam, beer and artisan breads.

Le Bugue has many traditional shops and also three large supermarkets, the majority of which are within easy walking distance of La Bessade.

Aquarium

Europe's largest freshwater aquarium with over 4000 m² of visitor space, 66 basins, 3 million litres of water, and 6000 fish and reptiles. Admire the famous carp, catfish, sturgeon and other species which are found in the rivers of the Dordogne. Visit also the Alligator Park which has 1500 m² dedicated to aligators and other reptiles and snakes.

Big Bird

Big Bird is Europe's highest climbing frame taking you more than 22 metres in height. There are more than 75 workshops spread over 4 floors.

Labyrinthe

Become explorers and go on an expedition in search of the last caveman still alive! The Labyrinthe Prehistorique covers more than 1000 m2, and you will have to solve 25 puzzles and cross 7 different zones including the famous Labyrinth of Mirrors.

Le Bournat

Le Bournat is a theme park which recreates a typical French village in 1900. Houses and businesses have been faithfully recreated, along with fun fair rides of the period. There are demonstrations and shows throughout the day and evening.

Canoeing

Spend a couple of hours, or more, canoeing down the Vézère or Dordogne rivers; passing through some of the most beautiful and spectacular countryside in France. The route between Roque Gageac and Port d'Enveaux is highly recommended.

Wine Cave

The wine cave (cellar) of Julien de Savignac is well worth a visit. The store stocks a vast range from inexpensive wines sold en vrac (bring your own empty jug) to rarefied vintages sold for thousands of euros. There is also an extensive range of whiskies.

Outdoor Pool

The large municipal outdoor swimming pool is a must on a hot summer’s day. It is very inexpensive, and has modern facilities.
